Applications for the American Association for Justice’s Women for Justice Education Fund’s 2012 Mike Eidson Scholarship are now available.
The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women Trial Lawyers Caucus in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson, whose vision and generosity inspired it. The Scholarship, traditionally given in the amount of $5,000, is awarded annually to a rising 3L (or rising 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a plaintiffs’ lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.
The application deadline is May 31, 2012 and the Scholarship will be awarded at the AAJ Annual Convention, which will take place this year in July in Chicago.
Save the date!

Visit to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility

The next visit to the ICE detention facility in Dodge County is scheduled for Wednesday, February 1. The visit is
conducted in collaboration with the National Immigrant Justice Center to screen persons detained by ICE for relief
from deportation. Immigrant detainees are not eligible for court-appointed counsel and this is usually the only
service offered to them throughout the deportation process.

These trips are a great opportunity to get firsthand experience and implement the skills learned in law school.
1Ls are encouraged to attend as are 2Ls and 3Ls! No prior immigration law experience is necessary, but Spanish
language skills are helpful. We are also in need and would greatly appreciate any UW certified drivers to volunteer.

To RSVP please reply with your name and date of birth to dwilliams6@wisc.edu ASAP and no later than Wednesday,
January 25. Please email with any questions!
Marsha L. Varvil-Weld, the Public Education Coordinator for the State Bar of Wisconsin, is looking for law students to participate in scoring high school mock trial competitions. The competitions help high school students develop research and oral advocacy skills while also learning how a trial works. Law students who would like to participate will be responsible for inputting the scores of each mock trial team into a software system.

This is a great opportunity for law students to network with lawyers and judges that help these events run smoothly. Volunteers will need to have access to a car in order to participate because the mock trials happen all over the Wisconsin area, including Madison, La Crosse, Janesville, and Juneau.

The State Bar will have a training session for volunteers in late January. The first competition will be on February 11th.

If you are interested please contact Marsha L. Varvil-Weld at: mvarvil-weld@wisbar.org or by phone at (608)250-6191 or (608)444-9404, ext.6191.

All 1Ls interested in trying out for Wisconsin’s Moot Court Board must self-enroll in the “2012 Moot Court Board 1L Tryouts” Lexis Web Course before January 24th at 5pm!
Anyone considering participating in the tryouts MUST self-enroll in this web course because this is the only way 1Ls can access and complete the tryout problem. The tryout schedule can be accessed via the web course once you have enrolled.
Enrolling in this web course does NOT obligate any 1L to participate – it merely gives you the option and information to do so.
Questions? Email Membership Chair Beth Engel (eengel@wisc.edu).

__________________________________________________________________

Attention all 1Ls trying out for Wisconsin’s Moot Court Board
Look for announcements on the “2012 Moot Court Board 1L Tryouts” Lexis Web Course regarding the room location for the workshop.
All 1Ls interested in trying out for Wisconsin’s Moot Court Board must self-enroll in the “2012 Moot Court Board 1L Tryouts” Lexis Web Course between January 18 and January 24th at 5pm!

Anyone considering participating in the tryouts MUST self-enroll in this web course during these dates because this is the only way 1Ls can access and complete the tryout problem. The tryout schedule can be accessed via the web course once you have enrolled.

Enrolling in this web course does NOT obligate any 1L to participate – it merely gives you the option and information to do so.

For help enrolling in the web course, please see the attached handout provided by Lexis.

Questions? Email Membership Chair Beth Engel (eengel@wisc.edu).

LOOSE CHANGE DRIVE!

Do YOU have any loose change lying around your home or office or even in your car’s dash? ‘Tis the season and the Wisconsin law students are in the holiday spirit! We have been changing the way we use our change in order to help those in need.

We encourage you to bring in your loose change to the Career Services office (Room 3221) any time until December 23rd and drop it into the jar on the front desk. These donations will be given to Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin (http://www.secondharvestmadison.org/). Second Harvest is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to ending hunger throughout Wisconsin. For every $1 we raise before the end of finals, a hungry Madisonian will receive THREE full meals. Our first day, Wednesday, we raised more than $95!!!

We encourage you to bring in your loose change to the Career Services office (Room 3221) any time until December 23rd and drop it into the jar on the front desk.

Thank you so much. If you have any other questions, please contact Henry Weiner at hweiner@wisc.edu.
To all the 2Ls and 3Ls who took the Employment Task Force Survey – thank you for your time!

Over the course of less than four weeks, 184 2Ls and 211 3Ls took the online survey to help the Task Force identify what issues, if any, need to be addressed to improve the school’s performance in the employment arena.

This is approximately 72% of the Class of 2013 and 74% of the Class of 2012. Also, a handful of individuals have volunteered to be interviewed by the Task Force who may be interested in more information.

This is a huge accomplishment, especially in light of finals.
Thank you for your support of the Law School!

Please contact Michelle Yun (myun@wisc.edu), Christy Coombs (clcoombs@wisc.edu), Tom Griesheimer (tgriesheimer@wisc.edu) or any of your Class Representatives (contact information here:http://wisconsinsba.org/contact/) if you are still interested in being interviewed or have any questions.

Thanks again!

Come Interact With Future Professors

The law school is seeking to hire a tenured track professor. Our final candidate, Priscilla Ocen, will be visiting this upcoming Tuesday, November 22nd. Priscilla’s “job talk” presentation will be based on a paper entitled Punishing Pregnancy: Race, Incarceration and the Shackling of Pregnant Prisoners, forthcoming in the California Law Review.

Priscilla’s research focuses on the exploration of two separate but related issues: the relationship between race, gender and punishment and the integration of theories of criminal procedure within traditional anti-discrimination law. Priscilla is currently a Critical Race Studies Law Teaching Fellow at UCLA School of Law. Prior to her time teaching at UCLA, she worked as a Thurgood Marshall Fellow at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights in San Francisco. She began her legal career as a law clerk for Judge Eric Clay of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Priscilla graduated in the top 15% of her class at UCLA Law School with a concentration in Critical Race Studies in 2007. She also earned her Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies and Political Science from San Diego State University in 2003.

The presentation will be from 12 p.m to 1:20 p.m. and students can meet with her from 1:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
As usual, food will be provided during the presentation and refreshments are provided during the student interaction period.
If you have any questions, feel free to email Christopher Byers cbyers@wisc.edu or Eli Wykell ejwykell@wisc.edu.
Call for outline submissions!

The SBA is currently seeking outlines to revitalize and revamp our outline bank. For those of you who aren’t aware, our website was attacked by a virus earlier in the semester, and most of our outlines were lost when we switched to our new website. We are currently working to get this problem addressed. In the meantime, if you have any outlines you would like to add to the new bank, please email them to Christy at uwsbaweb@gmail.com. Please remove your name and any other personal information before submitting any materials. Thank you for your patience and understanding!
Shackled during Labor and Delivery: An Inhumane Practice
Monday and Tuesday 11/21-22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Stop by our table in the Atrium for more information on the practice of shackling female inmates during labor and delivery.
Shackling during labor is the common policy in jails and prisons in many states.
Jails and prisons put non-violent women in restraints, i.e. leg irons, waist chains and wrist shackles during childbirth.
Pregnant women in many states are shackled on the way to the hospital, while they are giving birth, and during recovery.
There is no Wisconsin regulation or statute prohibiting the shackling of nonviolent jail or prison inmates during labor and delivery. Come find out how you can help change that!

Also check out WLSRJ’s annual clothing sale! Grab an order form to order UW Law clothing for everyone on your holiday shopping list.
Just stop by our table on Monday or Tuesday between 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.

To order now, please fill out the following form and drop a check/cash envelope into the red hang file of Katherine Dellenbach. Checks should be made payable to UWLSRJ!
